Bangkok is an intriguing city of paradoxes, with a constantly changing skyline and yet enchanting glimpses of the rich, ancient Thai heritage which appear as refreshing contrasts at every corner. Classical Thai teak houses, carved flourishes and all, are situated firmly in the heart of the city. The Thai culture is rich with Buddhist history, and from the "home base" of Legacy Suites, one of the most famous religious monuments in the city to visit is the Erawan Shrine. Located near the Chitlom Skytrain Station, which has an elevated walkway overlooking the shrine, it gathers flocks of devotees 24 hours a day. If it's true grandeur and ancient style which you came to Thailand to find, visit the stately Grand Palace or Wat Phra Kaew, the famous temple home to Thailand's most revered Buddha image, the Emerald Buddha. Built in 1782, Wat Phra Kaew is a royal temple built within the grounds of the Grand Palace. Nearby is the equally famous Wat Pho, with the Reclining Buddha statue and home to the most famous Thai massage school where expert masseurs can give weary travellers a welcome break.
Jim Thompson's legacy of fine Thai silk craftsmanship and design earned him the title of the "father of the Thai silk industry". Just a short walk from the National Stadium's BTS Skytrain station, his famous house, a unique structure of adjoining Thai wooden houses is a major tourist attraction, is another lasting legacy the American gentleman left behind after disappearing mysteriously during a walk in the Cameron Highlands of Malaysia.
The Lumpini Stadium is one of Thailand's most famous sporting arenas and celebrated home of the traditional 'Muay Thai' or Thai boxing. Lumpini Station hosts many evening bouts of this gritty, artistic sport throughout the week.
Excursions away from the enchanting city lead to the ancient capital of Ayutthaya and the legendary Bridge over the River Kwai.
